In this ever changing post-COVID era, aspiring executives face new, unpredictable challenges. It鈥檚 more important than ever to have a career plan听that maps out where you want to be and the skills you need to get there.听But it鈥檚 essential that those skills meet the ever-changing demands of global business.听
Jobs in demand in 2022
The jobs in demand are听emerging into a clear pattern.听According to听天美传媒鈥檚听latest听Employment听Report, the听consulting sector remains the most popular听destination听for听MBA听graduates,听with technology听and digital听disruption听also听continuing听to dominate the playing field.听
There鈥檚 a very good reason for this, according to Patrick Wallen,听executive director of听天美传媒鈥檚听Career听Development听Center.听听
鈥In the face of the pandemic, tech is taking over industries like retail and transport,鈥听he says.听鈥淲别鈥檙别听also听seeing a clear pattern in the positions that are available, with structured organizations like consulting听and banking听taking on talent at the highest levels, but fast–moving consumer goods听and high-street retail really suffering.鈥听
And, he adds,听recruiters are looking for a听specific set of skills, regardless of sector.听鈥淧eople are looking for potential, more than anything, with a really strong growth mindset,鈥 says Wallen.听
听鈥Recruiters want people with the听ability to deal with uncertainty, flexibility,听and candidates听who don鈥檛 just embrace change, but thrive on it and听deliver results,听time after time.鈥听

So听what does this mean for听young talent听looking for job opportunities?听
Job opportunities in 2022
Coronavirus has transformed the recruitment landscape, with听video interviews, virtual assessments and听short-term projects replacing in-person听appraisals听for long-term posts. But, says Wallen, this can be听an advantage.听
鈥淭he positive aspect of the new way of working is that distance is no object,鈥 he points out.听鈥淯nstructured recruiting听is down听by a significant amount: there鈥檚 a lot less rotation,听people aren鈥檛 leaving their roles.听But the听big international companies are still听operating their management programs,听so these are the obvious choice for听听and听听graduates.鈥听

With the distance barrier removed, recruiters have a much wider talent pool to choose from.听But although travel isn鈥檛 an option,听networking is essential听鈥听as is a healthy dose of reality.听
鈥With so much strong competition applying for the top jobs, you have to ask yourself if you鈥檙e the right person for听the role,鈥澨says Wallen. 鈥淵ou either have it or you don鈥檛 鈥 and if you don鈥檛 have it, don鈥檛 apply.鈥听
What鈥檚 more important,听he听says, is knowing where you can add value听and what you can bring to the table.听听
鈥You need to really widen the search.听Networking is essential, you need to find the correct people that can refer you in a company and not wait for a response from HR.听You need to differentiate yourself and show your value proposition to the company.听Find the听opportunities that do suit you and convince the recruiter that you鈥檙e the right person for the job.鈥听
What recruiters are looking for听
In an uncertain global business landscape, recruiters听value leadership听potential over all else.听
鈥淧otential leaders need to understand how their decisions impact the business,鈥 says Wallen. 鈥MBA听and听MiM听graduates have that听rounded听business perspective and understand operations as well as balance sheets.鈥听
In听, 33% of听students听made听the听鈥迟谤颈辫濒别鈥痡耻尘辫,鈥听changing听their听industry, function and geography.听It鈥檚 a flexible, committed attitude that鈥檚 essential for future leaders, says Wallen.听听
鈥淩ecruiters value motivated people who can not only do the job, but are proactive, with fresh ideas and don鈥檛 wait to be told what to do.听They鈥檙e looking for humble people, who understand that they still have things to learn and are prepared to make the changes necessary to meet global business demands.听
鈥淭he MBA听and听the听MiM听teach you how to听negotiate听an ever-changing business听landscape and equip you with the skills you need to听adapt.听But the hard work doesn鈥檛 end when you graduate.听You have to find your own opportunities and prove that you鈥檙e up to the challenge.鈥听听
